| THE ALPHA PHI FOUNDATION
The original ten women who founded Alpha Phi were united with a common purpose. They felt the need to reach out and a circle of friends who could sympathize. Alpha Phis today share that same need. They face many of the same challenges and some new ones. The Alpha Phi Foundation was created to support Alpha Phis and others in need and to express the philanthropic spirit of love and charity intended by the Founders.
The Foundation supports collegiate programming in healthe education and leadership development, cardiac research and education, and financial assistance for women of all ages through the Forget-Me-Not Fund, emergency grants and undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
Cardiac Care
Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. Today, research into the diognosis and treatment of women's heart disease is a special interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation. Gender differences in diagnosing and treating cardiac health problems are becoming widely recognized.
Scholarships
The Foundation supports women in all stages of their education. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded to Alpha Phi collegians and alumnae every year. Non-traditional educational scholarships are also available to Alpha Phi women who need additional course work for certification, career advancement or to re-enter the work force.
The Forget-Me-Not Fund
The Forget-Me-Not Fund was established to assist Alpha Phi alumnae facing grave health problems, natural disasters or other financial crises.
Educational Grants to the Fraternity
The Foundation funds educational programming in the areas of responsible alcohol use, anti-hazing, AIDS awareness, women's health and safety, and other programs developed for Alpha Phi collegiate chapters. The Foundation also funds the educational training sessions at Convention and regional Leadership Conferences that help officers develop the skills necessary to assume strong leadership roles within their chapters as well as in the future.
Contribution to the Foundation
All collegiate chapters are expected to make a contribution to the Foundation every year. Some collegiate chapters, with sufficient membership size, will be challenged to reach certain dollar contribution goals. Chapters are honored at Convention for their donations to the Alpha Phi Foundation.
What We Do to Help
Every Alpha Phi chapter across the nation throws an annual Red Dress Gala to support the Alpha Phi Foundation. This year our chapter will be holding its second annual event. Red Dress Gala is a great time for parents to not only spend time with their daughters, meet other Alpha Phi parents, but get to see an important aspect of what it is to be an Alpha Phi. With our parents and friends help last year we were able to raise over $5,000 to give to the Alpha Phi Foundation to combat women's cardiac care. The event was held at a nearby hotel and featured a three-course dinner, a silent and live auction, as well as a speaker on how heart disease affects people on a daily basis. This year we held our Red Dress Gala on Friday, September 28th during San Diego State's parent's weekend. The event included a sit down dinner, dancing, silent auction, as well as gambling. It was lots of fun and helped us raise more money than last years for our Foundation.
Ivy Splash is our annual philanthropy event. It is unique to our chapter of Alpha Phi and is a competition between all the fraternities on campus. During the week of Ivy Splash our girls get paired with a fraternity and coach them on various pool activities. Then on Saturday we all meet at the campus pool to compete. This years competitions included 4 person relay races, Speedo competitions, and everyone's favorite the synchronized swimming competition. It is a fun day in the sun for everyone involved and a great way to fundraise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation. Congratulations to last year's winner Phi Kappa Theta!!! |
