The original ten women who founded Alpha Phi were united with a common purpose. They felt the need to form a circle of friends that could sympathize and reach out to their community. Alpha Phis today share that same need. They face many of the same challenges the original founders did, and some new ones. The Alpha Phi Foundation was created to support Alpha Phis and others in need and to express the philanthropic spirit of love and charity intended by the Founders. We raise and award funds for programs that advance leadership development, encourage academic excellence, improve women’s heart health, support our sisters in need, and educate about the value of philanthropy.

Women's Heart Health
Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. One in six women die from Heart Disease, making it this country's biggest killer. Today, research into the diagnosis and treatment of women's heart disease is a special interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation. Gender differences in diagnosing and treating heart health problems are becoming widely recognized.

Scholarships
The Foundation supports women in all stages of their education. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded to Alpha Phi collegians and alumnae every year. Non-traditional educational scholarships are also available to Alpha Phi women who need additional course work for certification, career advancement or to re-enter the work force.

The Forget-Me-Not Fund

One of the most special life-long aspects of Alpha Phi is the Forget-Me-Not Fund. The Forget-Me-Not Fund was established to assist Alpha Phi alumnae facing grave health problems, natural disasters, or other financial crises. Alpha Phis are sisters for life – we support one another and help each other in times of need.

Annual Red Dress Gala
Alpha Phi chapters across the nation throw a Red Dress event annually to support the Alpha Phi Foundation. This year our chapter will be holding its third annual Red Dress Gala. With the help of our parents and friends last year, we were able to raise over $1,500 to give to the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of women's heart health. In Fall 2011, we plan to open this event to our friends and family, all of San Diego State University, and the San Diego community to help us raise even more money. The event includes a 3-course dinner, musical entertainment, a live auction, a silent auction, and a raffle.

Ivy Splash
Ivy Splash is our philanthropy event. It is unique to our chapter of Alpha Phi and is a competition between all the fraternities on campus. During the week of Ivy Splash our girls get paired with a fraternity and coach them on various pool activities. On Saturday we all meet at the pool to show off our skills. This Fall, Ivy Splash was held at The Wave House in San Diego and was extremely successful. The competitions included relay races, a Speedo competition, a synchronized swimming competition, and a belly-flop contest. It is a fun day by the pool for everyone involved and a great way to fundraise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation.

Eat Your Heart Out
Last year, we held our first annual Eat Your Heart Out fund-raiser. We transformed our chapter house into an Italian restaurant, and opened it to the SDSU community. We served $5 all-you-can-eat pasta and breadsticks all evening and successfully raised money to donate to the Alpha Phi foundation!
