The original ten women who founded Alpha Phi were united with a common purpose. They felt the need to form a circle of friends that could sympathize and reach out to their community. Alpha Phi’s today share that same need. They face many of the same challenges the original founders did, and some new ones. The Alpha Phi Foundation was created to support Alpha Phi’s and others in need and to express the philanthropic spirit of love and charity intended by the Founders. We raise and award funds for programs that advance leadership development, encourage academic excellence, improve women’s heart health, support our sisters in need, and educate about the value of philanthropy and cardiac care.
Cardiac Care
Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. One in six women die from Heart Disease, making it this country's biggest killer. Today, research into the diagnosis and treatment of women's heart disease is a special interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation. Gender differences in diagnosing and treating cardiac health problems are becoming widely recognized. The Alpha Phi Foundation directly benefits the American Heart Association.
Scholarships
The Foundation supports women in all stages of their education. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded to Alpha Phi collegians and alumnae every year. Non-traditional educational scholarships are also available to Alpha Phi women who need additional course work for certification, career advancement or to re-enter the work force.
The Forget-Me-Not Fund
One of the most special life-long aspects of Alpha Phi is the Forget-Me-Not Fund. The Forget-Me-Not Fund was established to assist Alpha Phi alumnae facing grave health problems, natural disasters, or other financial crises. Alpha Phi’s are sisters for life – we support one another and help each other in times of need.
Annual Red Dress Gala
Every Alpha Phi chapter across the nation throws an annual Red Dress Gala to support the Alpha Phi Foundation. This year our chapter will be holding its third annual event. With our parents and friends help last year, we were able to raise over $5,000 to give to the Alpha Phi Foundation to combat women's cardiac care. In Spring 2010, we plan to open this event to our friends and family, all of San Diego State University, and the San Diego community to help us raise even more money. The event includes a 3-course dinner, musical entertainment, a live auction, a silent auction, and a raffle.
Ivy Splash
is our annual philanthropy event. It is unique to our chapter of Alpha Phi and is a competition between all the fraternities on campus. During the week of Ivy Splash our girls get paired with a fraternity and coach them on various pool activities. On Saturday we all meet at the pool to show off our skills. In Spring 2008, Ivy Splash was held at The Wave House in San Diego. The competitions included 4 person relay races, a Speedo competition, a synchronized swimming competition, and a belly-flop contest. It is a fun day by the pool for everyone involved and a great way to fundraise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation. We are planning to have a brand new philanthropy in Fall 2009!
Jenny's Walk
Every spring we also hold a Walk-a-Thon, Jenny’s Walk, here at SDSU in memory of our sister Jenny Poliakoff who passed away in 2007. She was a founding member and volunteer for the San Diego Friendship Circle, a non-profit organization that helps children who have disabilities. The organization gives them a place to find friendship, support, assistance with their homework, and fun activities, which both the parents and children benefit from. The entire Greek community as well as San Diego County helps us out each year by donating money and volunteering for the 5K walk throughout San Diego State's beautiful campus. It is a really fun and exciting event including games, entertainment, and food which gives Alpha Phi the chance to continue Jenny's legacy of charity and community service. May 3, 2009 will be the second annual Jenny’s Walk. For more information, please visit

Alpha Phizza
This year, we held our first annual Alpha PHIzza fund-raiser. We transformed our chapter house into a tropical oasis, and opened it to the SDSU community. We served $3 all-you-can-eat Milo's pizza, and $2 "umbrella Mocktails" all evening. We were able to raise over $500 to donate to the Alpha Phi foundation!
